What our employees are saying

Ever wonder what it's like to work at Dollar Tree or Family Dollar? Our associates will tell you we are committed to personal development, growth, and camaraderie, which allows us to achieve incredible results. In fact, in 2021, more than 48,000 associates were promoted into new positions within the organization. We genuinely care about each of our associates, no matter where they are located or what role they play within our corporate structure.
"I started working at Dollar Tree as a part-time Associate in 2006 after the birth of my first child as something to do in my spare time. Before long, I took an opportunity to grow my career and became a full-time Merchandise Assistant Store Manager. When a Store Manager position became available, I hesitated because I wasn’t sure if I was ready to take on the responsibility. My District Manager motivated me, and after finding the courage, I applied and got the job! I went into training and in my first year, my store was in the top 600 in the country. I now have a model store and train other Store Managers in the district. To be successful at Dollar Tree, I have to be a little bit of everything — boss, cashier, stocker, and counselor, and be willing to do the best job I can in each of those roles."

"For the past nine years, my part-time journey through the ranks at Dollar Tree has been nothing short of a profound experience. I began my career as a part-time Sales Associate with drive and ambition to try something new and see where it took me. Here I am today, still an eager individual working for a Company that took me from a part-time cashier to a full-fledged District Manager! Doors are opening all the time... ready yourself to walk through them."

"Over the last 20 years, I have made my way from working as a part-time stocker to Category Director, responsible for the success of one of our largest categories. As my roles have evolved and the Company has grown, there are three primary reasons why Dollar Tree has remained the right place for me: 1) There are so many opportunities for hard-working, enthusiastic, and talented people. You can shine and explore new positions without ever getting bored. 2) We do the right thing for the right reason. There are countless examples of how we take care of our people — it’s not a policy, it’s our culture. 3) We recognize and reward everyone. When I received my 5-year anniversary watch, my District Manager at the time took a special trip to my store to present my award in person. Whether it’s through our benefits programs, such as profit-sharing, or through special recognition in our company newsletter, we are always willing to let people know they are doing a good job."

"I have worked for Dollar Tree for over a year and have already been given several opportunities to grow my career within different shifts and departments. In my current role, I lead a team in the shipping department. I enjoy helping people and am willing to do what it takes to make our team successful. I stress the importance of quality in all we do — to make sure the products get to the right place, undamaged. If we don't do our jobs effectively, our stores can’t sell quality products to our customers. My advice to anyone considering a job in our distribution centers is to not look at it as just another job. Be hands-on, learn every position, and familiarize yourself with every department. Put yourself in the shoes of those we serve, our customers. Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores sell food, clothes, and other needs-based merchandise, and without us, our company wouldn’t be able to deliver that to our communities. It all starts here."

"In 2000, I came across a Dollar Tree Store Manager position advertised in my local newspaper. I had previously worked as a District Manager for a national bowling chain and a consultant for a fast-food chain, but I was looking for something different. Soon after I applied, I met with the Regional HR Manager and Regional Director and was hired. Less than a year later, I transitioned to a District Manager position. As a DM, I pursued an MBA with assistance from Dollar Tree’s college reimbursement program. After graduation, I entered into Human Resources and was a Regional HR Manager for six years before transitioning back to store operations as a Market Manager. After a year and a half, I was promoted to Regional Director, my current position today. What I love about Dollar Tree are all the opportunities available to grow your career. The growth of our people and the institutional knowledge they have to offer has helped take our company to new heights."

"I was hired at the first Nationwide Hiring Event as a Stocking Associate. Last year, I attended the Internal Career Day to learn about opportunities within the company and soon became an Assistant Store Manager. I’m currently the full-time ASM at a Dollar Tree store in Norfolk, Va. Down the road, my goal is to grow to be a Store Manager, then I would like to find a position at the Store Support Center."

"My passion for budgeting and finance started while I was growing up helping my dad reconcile his business’ bank statements and records for tax season. I went to college and started a career in audit and public accounting, however, I wanted to get into finance and have the ability to interact with people. I was attracted to Dollar Tree because I didn’t want to be pigeonholed in a certain job — I wanted to learn and gain an understanding for the Company as a whole. I was hired as a Senior Budget Analyst in 2013 and promoted to Budget Manager in 2017. In my position, I interact with every department to understand each budget and, with my team, prepare the high-level financial statements and forecasts for Dollar Tree. Each month, I present the financial forecasts to our C-level executives and have the opportunity to help shape the future of Dollar Tree. I love working for a growing company that’s always challenging me to learn something new and think outside the box."

"I moved from New York City to New Jersey to take care of my mother due to an illness. I was going through a tough time in my life, personally and professionally, and was desperate to find a job. One day, I walked into a Family Dollar and the Store Manager was looking for an Assistant Store Manager. I shared that I had a lot of retail and management experience and submitted my application. One week later, my Family Dollar journey began and here I am nearly 10 years later as a Store Manager! I am so proud to be a part of this company and to learn from amazing leaders who have trained me on all aspects of business management. I have earned countless awards, including Store Manager of the Region. I feel respected and recognized by my peers, leadership and, most importantly, our entire community of customers."

"Prior to joining Family Dollar in 2016 I was in customer service and had never worked in a warehouse environment. I was hired as an order filler and then moved around to several outbound positions before I took on more of a lead role. About a year ago, I participated in our distribution center’s GOAL program, which is a training course that develops Associates into supervisor and management roles. Recently I was promoted to supervisor of our receiving department thanks in part to the investment Family Dollar made in me. We do a good job in developing leaders within the company and offering many learning and growth opportunities. We work in a fast-paced, exciting work environment where every day is different. Because our distribution center ships to Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores, I have a connection to both sides of the company. We all take pride in the work with do for Family Dollar and Dollar Tree."

"A lot has changed in the 30+ years I’ve worked at Dollar Tree, but our core values have remained the same. When I started as a computer operator in 1986, Dollar Tree was in the process of opening its first four stores. Today, I’m a vice president in our IT department, supporting more than 15,000 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar Stores and 25 Distribution Centers in the United States and Canada. Technology changes over the years have provided continuous growth opportunities and challenges, allowing me to wear a variety of hats within our IT department and participate in a vast number of IT initiatives. I am proud to be part of a team that continuously meets the needs of our successful and growing $1.00 price-point and discount retail business models. Working at Dollar Tree has been an amazing and challenging journey, and I look forward to all of the exciting growth to come."

"In 1994, I was hired as an Assistant Store Manager and was promoted to Store Manager within three months. After about three years and lots of training, I was promoted to District Manager and have been in this role for over 20 years. Recently, I was asked to be a part of a brand-new initiative for one of my stores in Harmony, NC. We were testing a new remodel concept for $1 WOW sections utilizing Dollar Tree merchandise, along with an expanded party assortment, freezers and coolers. The concept was a resounding success and Family Dollar will renovate more than 1,500 stores across the country with our model by the end of fiscal year 2019. It was very exciting to be a part of a company-wide initiative, especially as the first store. What I truly love about my job is the ability to make a difference in the lives of our Associates and to train and develop them to grow in our company. We take care of our people—it’s like a family here."

"I joined Dollar Tree more than six years ago in our Strategic Planning group. In this role, I worked on various strategic initiatives for the company, including the Family Dollar integration. I left Dollar Tree in 2016 to pursue an MBA and rejoined the company after graduation. When I came back, I was eager to grow further with the company. With my leadership’s support, I trained in the field, starting as an Assistant Store Manager, then Store Manager before running a small district locally. During this time, I gained a deep understanding of the business and it inspired me to transition to the Merchandising department. This journey would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of multiple teams and individuals within the Company."
